Leprechauns

Leprechauns are one of Ireland's most enduring legends.  Their origin can be traced to an 8th century water spirit known as a Luchorpán.  Eventually, the stories of this spirit were combined in their culture with a heavy drinking household spirit said to live in cellars, and gave us what we know today as leprechauns.  Leprechauns are hardworking fairy folk known for their skill in cobbling, and it's said that if you catch one, he'll gladly ransom his freedom for a pot of gold.  Although they are most often shown wearing green in popular culture, leprechauns were traditionally depicted as wearing red, but their style of dress did vary by region.
