The Mothman Cometh
A handful of sightings in November of 1966 introduced the Mothman phenomenon. Five men digging a grave at a cemetery near Clendenin, West Virginia, first claimed to see a man-like figure flying low from the trees over their heads. Followed by two young couples from Point Pleasant, Roger and Linda Scarberry and Steve and Mary Mallette, who told police they saw a large black creature with glowing red eyes in their car headlights while visiting the nearby abandoned TNT depot.
“It was like a man with wings,” Steve Mallette recounted to the Point Pleasant Register. “It wasn’t anything like you’d seen on TV or in a monster movie.”
According to the frightened couples, the winged monster followed them as they drove away, keeping pace with their car at speeds of up to 100 mph. It let up only as they approached the lights of Point Pleasant.
