A Short History of the Chupacabra

The first reports of the creature coined ‘El Chupacabra’ came out of Puerto Rico in 1995.  In March of that year, eight sheep were found completely exsanguinated, with three puncture wounds in their chests.  Later that year, in August, eyewitness Madelyne Tolentino claimed to have seen the creature in Canóvanas, Puerto Rico, when as many as 150 farm animals and pets had been killed the same way.

In a 1996 interview, Tolentino said the beast walked on two legs, like a man, and its dark, black eyes “were damp and protruding, running up to its temples and spreading to the sides,” similar to how some alien contactees describe the eyes of a 'grey.'  The creature stood about four-feet-tall, and had three long, skinny fingers at the end of similarly long arms; it's legs were also long and skinny, with three webbed toes. A distinctive ridge of spikes ran the length of the thing's back.  She said she watched the cryptid through a picture window in her house until she lost sight of it in the tall grass of a neighboring lot.

The situation in Puerto Rico became dire enough that Mayor Jose Soto recruited volunteers to help hunt the creature responsible, but they ultimately came up empty.  Tales of the chupacabra quickly spread throughout the Americas, with some investigators noting similarities between its victims and those animals said to be slain as a part of the 'cattle mutilation' phenomenon reported in the USA.
