Mysterious Figure Caught on Home Security Camera in York County, Pennsylvania
York County, Pennsylvania resident Amanda Pitt, 34, claims to have captured a mysterious figure on security camera in her home after being awoken by strange footsteps last October 21st.
Amanda said that when she first woke from the footsteps, she thought one of her children was responsible, but when she checked their bedrooms, they were all sound asleep.
She went back to bed, only to be awoken again by the footsteps at around 3:40 a.m.
That's when she checked the family's home security camera and saw the mysterious figure standing in the doorway to their kitchen.
Worried that someone had broken in, Amanda roused her husband, Jeffrey Pitt, 34, who searched the house but found no signs of an intruder.
The only thing out of place was the family dog, Ollie, an English Shepherd, who was nervously pacing back and forth.
“At about 3:40 in the morning I heard heavy walking up the stairs into the living room and then into the kitchen,” Amanda told The Mirror.
I made sure Jeffrey was still in bed because I thought it could be him. I checked on the camera and stared at it for a little bit because I thought I saw somebody.
I turned it off wondering 'what is that?' and laid there, I was too scared to go back upstairs so I turned the camera back on and I saw the figure, so I screenshotted it.
My first instinct was that someone had broken in. I woke up my husband and said that I thought there was someone in the house and the kids were upstairs.
He went upstairs and checked the whole house but there was nobody there. I showed him the photo of the figure and he was like 'what is that?'.
I have a dog and if he hears a noise, he goes crazy, but he was scared. He was pacing back and forth. My dog is a barker, he's very annoying with that so if someone had broken in, he would 100% let us know. We thought that was weird.
I couldn't get back to sleep, I laid there and turned on the TV because I was scared.
I kept going back to the camera, but I couldn't see it anymore, so I thought maybe I was seeing things.
The next morning, I didn't even know what to make of it.
Opinions on the image are divided within the paranormal community, with some speculating that there must be a prosaic explanation—whether that means a neighbor somehow entered the family’s home or one of their children snuck out of bed and returned without Amanda noticing—while others believe it might represent something stranger.
Emily Wayland, the Singular Fortean Society’s video and photograph analyst, was reluctant to make a determination without more evidence.
“If there was a person physically present, they might have been wearing darker clothing, which would appear white on infrared, and the camera’s slower frame rate would make them look blurry or ghostly. But we have to take into account that this contradicts the witness’s testimony that nobody else was present. Without more information, I can’t say for sure what exactly it is,” she said.
According to Amanda, the family has experienced other seemingly paranormal events since moving into their home in 2020.
Those events, like this mysterious figure, seem to be centered around the 21st of the month.
"Things have happened here before. The people who lived here before didn't live here for very long but we never found out why," she said.
We have a laundry room attached to the basement. I was upstairs in the living room on the phone to my mom and alone in the house.
I got a notification on my phone that there was movement in the laundry room.
I checked the camera; I could see the door and a white thing moved across it.
I thought 'oh my god, there's someone down there'. I went downstairs and there was no one there.
I'd told my mom that she might need to call 911, I didn't know what to think of it.
"We hear footsteps a lot," she added. "My mom was babysitting my children one day and our kitchen sink just turned on. You have to pull the lever out to get it to turn on so it's not something that could happen on its own."
Although Amanda said that she isn’t normally a believer in ghosts, the things she has experienced have made her “question everything,” and despite the family moving to Florida next year, they would consider calling in an expert to make sure nothing in the house means them harm.
"It's the first house that I've ever owned so it was exciting, and it was perfect for our family. It's in a small neighborhood, it's a very good, rural area," Amanda said.
I've never been a ghost believer, but we've had things happen that make us question it.
That picture is terrifying. Thinking there's something like that in your house you question everything.
You hear footsteps, or something moving, and think 'could it be that?'.
When we first moved in nothing happened, it wasn't until we'd been living here for almost a full year, and something would happen, and we would say it was nothing.
We're confused, we just question everything when we hear stuff now. It's not so much living in fear, it's just questioning everything.
Could it be real? I don't know how to explain these things, I don't know how to explain the photos and videos, I just have proof now.
It seems like the 21st is the day that things happen. If things keep escalating, then we'll look into it more and maybe get an expert in.
If it's not causing any harm, then we'll live with it until we're able to move.
The Pitt family aren’t the only ones wondering what they might have captured on camera in their home.
With the proliferation of modern security cameras and other recording devices in the home, more people than ever before are coming forward with what they believe could be evidence of paranormal phenomena.
The Singular Fortean Society has covered several such cases recently, including a family in Clovis, New Mexico, who thought they had captured a ghost on camera running past their home in 2017; a woman in Atlanta, Georgia, who, in 2019, believed that her home security camera caught an image of her son who had passed away two years prior; also, in 2019, Los Angeles resident Natalie Wallace said that she and her husband had been seeing strange, ghostly forms appear on their baby monitor, and Michigan residents Heather Brough and Joshua Higgins caught nanny cam footage of what they believed to be the ghost that had been terrorizing their household for weeks; and in 2021, at least two residents of Mentor, Ohio, recorded video on home security cameras of a mysterious phantom runner in their neighborhood.
