Paranormal Investigators Claim to Have Captured Ghostly "Little Girl" on Camera at Site of Mining Disaster in England
Paranormal investigators Linzi and Lee Steer claim to have captured a ghostly figure on camera during a livestream video recorded at Huskar Pit in South Yorkshire, England, on June 24th.
Huskar Pit is the site of an 1838 mining disaster that killed 26 children, aged 7 to 17, when heavy rains caused a nearby stream to burst its banks and flood a shaft through which the children were trying to escape.
The tragedy caused a public outcry that led to the 1842 Mines Act, which introduced some protections for child miners and prohibited any children under the age of ten from working underground.
A memorial depicting two children working underground has since been built on the site and can be seen in the Steers’ livestream.
According to the ghost hunters, the apparent apparition was not immediately visible during filming, and it was only later, when someone showed the duo a screenshot featuring the childlike figure, that they suspected something paranormal was at play.
In the video, a ghostly, white figure seems to float in front of a tree while Lee walks past without seeing it.
"It looks like a little girl standing there. I've captured a real-life spirit here. She looks like she's got a little white dress and I can see a little face. mouth and two eyes. It looks like she's elevated off the floor and she's got bare feet," Linzi told the Mirror.
It's really interesting because I think it's up near the day hole where the children sadly drowned. It's bizarre.
I'd say it's possibly one of the children from the Huskar Pit. It's heartbreaking to see. We didn't see the image until we got home and noticed a couple of people had seen it. It's mind-blowing.
We ask our viewers to screenshot anything of interest because we're not particularly watching the screen all of the time. Sometimes I wonder if people have doctored these screenshots but I'm watching the video now and I can see it. I believe this is 100 percent a spirit child.
Lee's a bit like 'wow', even though he's skeptical. If we put that on Facebook and we weren't live, people would say we've edited it. It's amazing. I'm sure if we took that to the locals at Silkstone they'd be really impressed.
She added that since it is believed the children's remains were washed and clothed in white after being recovered from the accident site, this explains why the ghostly little girl appears to be wearing a white dress.
Linzi also said that she always feels emotional when visiting the Huskar Pit memorial, from which she only lives 10 minutes away, and that she and Lee have picked up some "interesting" electromagnetic field readings while attempting to communicate with spirits at the site.
Reactions to the video have been mixed, with some viewers expressing their belief that the ghostly “little girl” could be authentically paranormal, while others insist that the only thing caught on camera was pareidolia caused by sunlight reflecting off of a tree trunk.
The Singular Fortean Society's photo and video analyst, Emily Wayland, thought that a technical glitch might be at least partially to blame.
"Something weird is happening with the camera in this," she said. "The figure stays motionless in line with the tree the whole time. As you get later in the video, there's a weird pixelation that could be due to compression from being shared to social media or something to do with the frame rate as it's being streamed. Maybe sunlight reflecting off of foliage is contributing to it, but something technological appears to be happening. Sometimes, pixelation can happen in a specific area when the camera is trying to make sense of what's there."
But, she added, she would need to have more information, such as the camera being used and the type of internet connection, to make a more definitive assessment.
