Reports from the Void: 'Oklahoma Giant Bat'
The Singular Fortean Society received the following email on January 30th, 2022.
On Friday night, just north of McLoud, Oklahoma, my husband and I almost had our windshield destroyed by a giant bat. It was inches from the glass three times, the truck behind us swerved from it too. Here's the crazy part: its wingspan was well over three feet. I work with animals including exotics, freelance with the USDA and Wildlife department and I've lived here my entire life. It didn't fit any look of any giant bats I looked into.
Assuming this witness was referring to the previous Friday night, then this sighting took place on January 28th.
Investigator Tobias Wayland replied to the witness and was able to make initial contact, but was ultimately unable to reach them by telephone and received no further response when trying to communicate via email.
The largest bat species native to Oklahoma is the hoary bat, with a wingspan of 16 inches, although the largest bat species in the world—native to the Philippines—is the giant golden-crowned flying fox, with a wingspan of five to five-and-a-half feet.
A number of anomalous giant bat sightings have been recorded by the Singular Fortean Society over the past several years as part of their investigation into the Lake Michigan Mothman phenomenon. Articles on those sightings can be found in their timeline here.
Often, as described above, the sightings are brief, and the witness sees the creature in flight for less than a minute before losing sight of it. Notably, there have been no reports of escaped exotic animals to explain the sightings in the areas in which they’ve been reported.
Reports from the Void is a repository to share those stories for which we do not have enough information to make a full report. This is usually because of little or no communication from the witness following their initial submission. The Singular Fortean Society will always provide as much information as possible regarding any correspondence during our attempts to speak with those involved.
This series is meant only to present you with the full breadth of the information sent to us, and makes no judgments towards the veracity of any stories shared within it.
