The Singular Fortean Society's 2019 Holiday Gift Guide
By Emily Wayland
Holiday Shopping is hard. We get it. It can be especially difficult when shopping for that weirdo in your life.
Say no more, the Singular Fortean Society is here to help!
For the third year in a row, we’re bringing you our Holiday Gift Guide to help you find the perfect gift for you or your fortean friend.
And also, if you’re shopping for Tobias or myself, we would not hate being gifted any of these. 😉 I know I made that joke last year, but it still applies….
Monsters in Print
Our friend Adam Benedict of the Pine Barrens Institute put out his first book, Monsters in Print, this year and we are big fans! A compilation of old newspaper articles about monsters, this book’s content is just as interesting as its beautifully designed cover. Monsters in Print is a must-have for your fortean library.
I personally love everything Grave Digger Candles does, and someday I swear I will get their black beeswax spine candles that I’ve been coveting for years, but I saw this ornament in their shop and knew it had to be included. At an approachable price point of $7.95, this merry yet morbid ornament makes a perfect stocking stuffer or gift for any exchange that has one of those pesky $10 limits.
Finding Jay is a documentary that our friend Jay Bachochin put together to record five years of Sasquatch research in Wisconsin’s Kettle Moraine Forest. It’s a documentary for the whole family, so fire up that Blu-Ray player and make a night of it.
Enamel pins are in right now, and so is Mothman. You should probably just throw this pin from Maiden Voyage Co. in any fellow fortean’s stocking….
Author Troy Taylor has released a fourth installment in his Cabinet of Curiosities series. This time, he explores haunted stories behind hotel rooms—a place where you’re supposed to feel comfortable. But what happens when someone or something else interrupts your stay? Find out, and pick up a signed copy of this book at the link above.
If you’re curious about the world of divination, oracle cards are a great way to introduce this magickal practice into your life. Kim Krans’ The Wild Unknown Animal Spirit is beautifully illustrated and wonderfully intuitive, while containing a lot of depth to the meaning of each card. Every card features a relatable creature of our world with whose energy we can connect.
Wisconsin author Linda Godfrey is back with another book chock-full of monster encounters. Godfrey shares stories of werewolves, bigfoot, goatmen, dogmen, and more!
Our holiday gift guide wouldn’t be complete without AT LEAST one krampus-y item. Last year we featured a candle shaped like this bell, so this year we thought we’d feature the bell itself. We love the antiqued look and superior craftsmanship that Dark Matter Props applied to this piece. On top of that, the packaging is festive and charming.
We’re immensely proud of Tobias’ first book, The Lake Michigan Mothman, and we really think you’re going to like it. It’s open, it’s honest, and it’s about time it was on the record; so put it in your favorite fortean’s stocking this year!
Keep your Christmas a little spooky with these adorable enamel pins from Em & Sprout. If you’re going to a formal family party, these pins are discrete enough than your disapproving Grandma might not notice. It can be your spooky little secret.
Paranormal Art Portal artist Will Barnes has a selection of amazing t-shirts in his TeePublic Store, but it’s not often we see the Loveland Frog featured compared to other popular cryptids like Bigfoot and Mothman. So show the frogmen some love and pick up this shirt for the fortean in your life.
Known for its cleansing powers, selenite crystal is intertwined in this beautiful wire-wrapped charm with black tourmaline, which itself has a reputation for being protective and banishing of negative energy. Holiday road trips are a practice for many this time of year, so get your loved one this beautiful charm by Earth Chakra Gems to hang off their rear view mirror for safe and stress-free travel.
This shirt, designed by yours truly, is our most popular design in the Singular Shop. If you don’t think this quite suits the weirdo you’re buying for, no worries, we have other shirts to choose from.
We are all for resurrecting the Victorian tradition of telling stories during Yule and Christmas. Perhaps hanging this print by Caitlin McCarthy Art will serve as inspiration to deck your walls with spooky, festive vibes.
Did you know the Pine Barrens Institute has an excellent selection of t-shirts in their shop? We’ve got quite the collection going on between Tobias and myself.
Author and Researcher Lon Strickler of Phantoms and Monsters shares stories of experiencers who might have seen beyond what we know, and explores the fact that we might not be alone in his newest book, Alien Disclosure.
Some of us may open a present and toss boring old gifted socks over our shoulders like in A Christmas Story, but these socks are too cool not to love.
Creep it real with your holiday guests by serving your favorite holiday drink in this set of glasses from Counter Couture Design.
Snuggle up on a cold winter night with this adorable plush of the usually-fearsome Flatwoods Monster by Cryptid Plushies.
Milwaukee author Tea Krulos released his latest book this year, Apocalypse Any Day Now, which covers potential world-ending events and the people preparing for them.
Hopefully this list inspires you to find the perfect gift for the fortean in your life. Happy holidays!
