Mystery Lights Recorded over New Jersey; Posted to Reddit
A Winslow Township woman filmed a trio of mysterious lights floating over New Jersey on May 31st of this year, after which her boyfriend shared the film to social media site Reddit.
The witness—who told the Daily Star that her name was Brianna—said the footage was shot at around 9:40 pm that evening.
In the video, three lights can be seen moving together before slowly blinking out.
"I took the video, my boyfriend is the poster," Brianna commented in the video's post thread. "The video does not do the size and color of the lights justice. They were amber colored and appeared to be much larger than the camera is picking up. It looked to me like a triangle. And then all three lights disappeared quickly one by one."
The video was posted without sound, which Brianna explained was because she "was talking very loud. The video would have been unbearable to watch. Whatever they were gave off absolutely no sound at all."
Speculative explanations so far include everything from helicopters flying in formation to floating lanterns to the triangular TR-3B—an alleged secret project rumored to have been reverse-engineered from alien technology by the United States government..
While Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst—a military base which does utilize helicopters in its training—is only a few dozen miles northeast of Winslow Township, the lights do not feature the bright strobe lights common to helicopters flying at night.
Floating lanterns are the current, most popular, skeptical hypothesis, since the lights are similar in coloration to lanterns and they do not appear to remain a consistent distance from one another, as one would expect if they represented a single, triangular craft like the purported TR-3B.
Weather data for the area that night indicates it was partly cloudy with winds blowing 10 mph out of the southwest. However, the objects’ heading is not clear based on the video, so it is currently impossible to judge if they were moving with or against the wind. Furthermore, it remains unclear whether or not the lights’ disappearance is due to them moving behind cloud cover.
Brianna, for her part, said she doesn’t believe that what she recorded were floating lanterns, because “these moved at a much steadier and exact pace. The video is muted because I’m fighting with myself (very loudly) whether they were lanterns or not.”
At least one other person claimed to have seen something similar in the area, although their sighting took place over a year prior to Brianna’s.
According to that witness, “I'm in [southern New Jersey] between Camden and Burlington. Last year I had construction work at Harrah's [Atlantic City] for several months. One morning between 5-6 am on my way in, I saw that exact thing! It was right where 42 splits and [the Atlantic City] Expressway begins. It was pretty much directly over the road moving west toward Philly. So basically it moved directly over me, going the exact opposite direction as me. Looked to be about the same distance from the ground and moving very slow.”
"I thought it was close, I know I would always pass Winslow within a few minutes of where I described being," he continued. "That's why I thought it was worth mentioning. I should've also mentioned it was between January and March, and the sky was still dark when I saw it...but it was light out before I made it the last toll. I remember thinking something like ‘Damn, [five to ten] minutes after I saw it, it was light enough that I would've probably been able to see it pretty clearly.’ How many got to see it [five to ten] minutes after me? Or was it gone by then?"
"Last thing, this all made me think that maybe it's unknown to us, but still man-made," he added. "The fact that I saw that same thing in the same area, could mean that they only take it out from dusk til dawn...but who knows!"
