Mystery Lights Reportedly Filmed over South China Sea

A series of strange lights were recorded over the South China Sea last month, according to a report submitted to the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON).
The person who submitted the report (Case #119564) claimed to have filmed the video on November 24th from the flight deck of an aircraft at a distance of a mile or more away while flying at 39,000 feet.
In the video, a series of lights can be seen above the clouds. As the bottommost lights fade out, new lights appear at the top of the formation.
A person can be heard to say, “I don’t know what that is.”
To which someone else replies, “That is some weird shit.”
“It’s something flying,” says the first person.
“[It’s] gone,” responds the second.
Radio chatter can be heard in the background, during which an air traffic controller seems to say “Bauhinia 2735, contact Ho Chi Minh 120.7.”
Bauhinia is the callsign for Hong Kong Airlines, which would seem to corroborate the witness’s claim that the sighting took place over the South China Sea, since HX2735 makes regular flights over it for that airline.
Skeptical debunkers have speculated that the lights could be flares—specifically those used by the Chinese military, especially considering the contested nature of the South China Sea and their presence there—although critics of that hypothesis point out the lack of smoke or any visible aircraft that might have dropped them.
That argument led to further speculation from debunkers that the aircraft responsible might not be visible due to their size, distance, and coloration, although there is not sufficient evidence at this time to make any such determination.
So far, the lights remain unexplained.
