'On the Trail of...UFOs' Brings Investigative Focus Back to Experiencers
The latest offering from Small Town Monsters—On the Trail of…UFOs—is also its most prolific investigative series to date, spanning from coast to coast and including an array of authors and investigators in the field.
The series follows podcast host and story collector Shannon LeGro and filmmaker Seth Breedlove as they travel the country, trying to pin down the maddeningly elusive nature of the UFO phenomenon.
Shot in a throwback ‘90s aesthetic reminiscent of the X-Files, the series also hearkens back to another defining element of that time period in UFO investigation: a concentration on those experiencing the phenomenon and the investigators on the frontlines trying to help them understand it. Although the series covers all of the most popular narratives intertwined throughout the UFO phenomenon, including government conspiracies, disclosure, and other storylines prevalent in today’s media, it is this dedication to personal experience that is its real defining hallmark.
Typical of other Small Town Monsters productions, On the Trail of…UFOs touches briefly on various hypotheses for the UFO phenomenon, but doesn’t spend a lot of time pushing any particular perspective—the viewer is trusted to examine the evidence for themselves and make up their own mind. Well-known locations and events are covered, such as Kecksburg, Pennsylvania, New York’s Hudson Valley, and the Betty and Barney Hill abduction, but the production is very aware it is walking on well-trodden ground and sticks only to the facts of each case; providing context rather than pushing any personal agenda. It is this steadfast dedication to authenticity that sets the series apart from many of its counterparts.
On the Trail of…UFOs is an example of what a series can be when it’s produced by people whose only loyalty is to the truth. LeGro and Breedlove weren’t afraid to get their hands dirty out in the field while filming, and neither were the bevy of guest investigators featured throughout. It’s a refreshing effort in the era of keyboard investigators and endless internet arguments, and one that will hopefully help swing the pendulum of interest back towards what is actually important—the experiential nature of the UFO phenomenon.
Preorders for On the Trail of…UFOs are available through Small Town Monsters’ website. The series is slated for release March 20th on DVD and Blu-Ray.
