FAA "Neither Confirms Nor Denies" Existence of Records in AAF 2292 UFO Sighting Case

The Singular Fortean Society’s lead investigator Tobias Wayland received a noncommittal response from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) this week to the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request he’d filed following the February 21st sighting of a UFO by the pilot of American Airlines Flight 2292 (AAF 2292).

In the response, FAA Deputy Director of Aeronautical Information Services Jose Alfonso wrote that "the FAA neither confirms nor denies the existence of records which would indicate whether an individual or organization is or has ever been of investigatory interest of the federal government. Further, acknowledging federal government interest invites the risk of circumvention of federal law enforcement efforts. Therefore, we can neither confirm nor deny the existence of the records that you seek."

The response comes after statements released at the end of February by the Federal Aviation Administration and American Airlines which confirmed that the pilot of AAF 2292 did report a UFO over New Mexico and that the report is seemingly of interest to the FBI.

Both statements were published to The Drive.

The FAA statement confirmed that the pilot of AAF 2292 had reported a UFO, while hinting at what the FAA might know, or not know, about the sighting.

A pilot reported seeing an object over New Mexico shortly after noon local time on Sunday, [February 21st], 2021. FAA air traffic controllers did not see any object in the area on their radarscopes.

The other statement, released by American Airlines, mentions FBI involvement in the case.

Following a debrief with our Flight Crew and additional information received, we can confirm this radio transmission was from American Airlines Flight 2292 on [February 21st]. For any additional questions on this, we encourage you to reach out to the FBI.

It is unclear what the FBI’s interest in the encounter might be, although the law enforcement agency does routinely investigate foreign incursions into the U.S.

"The FBI is aware of the reported incident," FBI Albuquerque field office spokesperson Frank Connor wrote in an email to Fox News. "While our policy is to neither confirm nor deny investigations, the FBI works continuously with our federal, state, local, and tribal partners to share intelligence and protect the public. Anyone who is aware of suspicious or criminal activity should contact their local law enforcement agency or the FBI."

John Greenewald of The Black Vault filed FOIA requests with both the FAA and FBI, but received a response identical to that received by Wayland from the FAA, and a statement from the FBI declaring that the organization was “unable to identify records responsive to your request.”

“It is quite clear that neither the FAA nor the FBI want to talk about this UFO encounter in February,” Greenewald commented when sharing the responses to his FOIA requests on social media.
